Coffee and dark chocolate bbq meatballs
Meatballs, one of the greatest meaty inventions to grace the planet. Nothing screams "get in my mouth" louder than a ball of meat covered in a sauce. Oh what sauce did you say? Yes you heard correctly, a spicy, coffee and dark chocolate bbq sauce. So lets all shout it together. Get in my mouth. I hope your weekend is full of great food and weird sauces, after all, food is just a vehicle for sauce. Here's how to make meatballs in a coffee and dark chocolate bbq sauce.
TIME: 45 mins MAKES: 18 meatballs
For the meatballs:
400g beef mince
100g of Chorizo sausage, diced
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves of garlic, chopped
1 teaspoon of garlic salt
1 teaspoon of hot cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon of American mustard
1 teaspoon of ketchup
2 teaspoon of honey
1 teaspoon of smoked paprika
1 teaspoon of ground cumin
1 teaspoon of freshly chopped coriander
1 teaspoon of Worcester sauce
For the BBQ sauce:
400g chopped tomatoes
50g of dark chocolate
2 teaspoons of honey
2 teaspoons of ketchup
2 teaspoons of American mustard
2 teaspoons of Muscovado sugar
1 strong espresso shot
1.) Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.
2.) In a mixing bowl add the beef mince, onion, garlic and egg and mix together well. Add all of the spices, sauces and honey to the mix and mix using your hand squeezing pressing the beef together firmly to ensure it has all mixed together well. Once mixed, roll into even balls and set aside.
3.) In a saucepan add the chopped tomatoes and bring to the boil. Add the mustard, ketchup, Muscovado sugar and honey and mix together. Once mixed add the shot of espresso and dark chocolate and melt into the mix, simmer on a low heat for 10 minutes.
4.) In a frying pan, drizzle a little vegetable oil and set on a medium heat. Add the meatballs and brown them for 10 minutes, turning regularly to ensure an even cook. Once cooked, add them to a roasting dish and cover the meatballs with the BBQ sauce, mix and place in the oven for 10 minutes.
5.) Remove the meatballs from the oven, sprinkle with some freshly chopped coriander and some chilli flakes. Serve and enjoy!
